I%26#039;m sure there is a web programming pattern to add this layer of security to my web host, I just can%26#039;t find it. Changing file permissions doesn%26#039;t help because the world needs to be able to read files for the pages to behave correctly. Since they can read the files, they can also just navigate to them and read the source code. Please help!
What is the standard method for protecting JavaScript, CSS, and other sensitive source files on a web host?
is it really worth it?
css has to be read , as css, so it must be css. (you could stop using it,. JavaScript can do much of the same, but sloppier). css can be served from a cgi program , only to the pages on your site, with any extra crazy security you want (but they can be %26#039;view sourced%26#039;)
html has to be read, as html, so it must be html (you could use less html and use more ajax with headers to protect the data from prying eyes)
JavaScript doesn%26#039;t need to be read, it needs to be executed! it need not resemble the original code (look at google%26#039;s scripts!) A simple packer makes JavaScript unreadable to all but the best hackers!
http://dean.edwards.name/packer/ is the easy one time packer, there are other versions for automated packing!
and of course, all server side programs are protected by your server!
What is the standard method for protecting JavaScript, CSS, and other sensitive source files on a web host?
It%26#039;s %26quot;Don%26#039;t put anything sensitive in client side code in the first place%26quot;.
The browser has to be able to parse the code, and if the browser can, then so can users.

Reply:Never put anything you don%26#039;t want to be read by visitors into files that will be directly included to a URL response. No %26quot;secrets%26quot; (e.g., account/password combinations) should ever be in such files. You need some sort of controller that has access to your secure layers and mediates the handling of sensitive information without returning any of it in the response. This can be any of the usual types, e.g., servlet, jsp, php, perl, etc.
As for non-secret info that you just prefer not to make publicly available, the best you can hope for is to obfuscate it beyond the means of the lighter-weight programmer types to figure out. You can minify the code, removing all comments and whitespace. You can use non-documentating names for methods and fields. Means you have to manage multiple files that do the same thing, since the obfuscated version is not likely to be very easily directly supportable; then, evolutionary changes have to be made to the regular version, and a new obfuscated version created ...ugh!
Frankly, it ain%26#039;t worth the effort just to hide source code that will be included client-side. Look at the quality of the source code released by Yahoo in their YUI JavaScript libraries. I%26#039;ve done some pretty nifty stuff in JavaScript, but, for everything I%26#039;ve done that would be generally useful, there are alternate implementations as good or better that have been published by one of the Open Source library groups. When I find my code being recycled by others, I%26#039;m flattered. I enjoyed solving the problem - if it saves someone else some effort, cool.
Do you think that your code is worth %26quot;stealing%26quot; in some way that negatively impacts your business? If not, and there are no %26quot;secrets%26quot; in the code, let %26#039;em look and accept the compliment that anyone was interested.
Reply:It%26#039;s not possible to protect any sensetive information that is to be sent to a browser. The only thing you can do is process it server side.

Any hosting that allows PHP, MySQL or ASP.NET, so basically make sure you find yourself a programmer..but the ones I use are:
http://www.1and1.com
http://www.mediatemple.net
If you wanna do it with Yahoo, since Yahoo is more on beginners creating website, you would probably have to choose the more expensive packages...
If you wanna program urself, search up stuff about PHP and MySQL and/or ASP.NET..you gotta be good in Logic...if you love to design and do xhtml/css, most of the time, its super hard to learn...so get you a programmer...
remember...
most designers can%26#039;t programmer (backend wise)
most programmers can%26#039;t design (photoshop/illustrator wise)

email your host or read their faq page
Reply:GoDaddy%26#039;s tech support people will be more than happy to walk you through that. They probably have a place on their web site where you can do it without even calling them, but if you haven%26#039;t found it yet I imagine you might be getting frustrated.
Be clear that you don%26#039;t want to *transfer* the registration - you just want them to host the site. You already have a registrar with whom you are happy.
Good luck! :-)
Reply:This might work. Give it a try. Hopefully you know that an IP address has to be associated with your domain name and it has to registered in the Domain Name System (DNS) before it can be accessed via the Internet.

How do i get my publisher internet site on the web? I have a domain and web host?
You have to use an ftp client in order upload your files on the internet. Your internet provide should give you an account and password.
Then you will need to use the client (software) such as Eudora (as I%26#039;m sure there are many types of software to do this around) to upload the files to the provider%26#039;s server.
From there, it is on the internet...
Reply:You will need to get an FTP account with your host.
Then, the easiest thing is to is add a network place:
1. Open the Start menu and select My Network Places
2. The My Network Places screen will open
3. From the Network Tasks pane click the Add a network place
The Network Wizard will begin
Click Next to continue
The Wizard will ask you where you want to create this network place.
Select Choose another network location
Click Next
The Wizard will continue, asking you What is the address of this network place?
In the Internet or network address: dialogue box enter
ftp://ftp.yoursite.com
Click Next to continue
The Connect to yoursite.com screen will open
In the User name: dialogue box, enter your userid (probabbly: username@yoursite.com)
In the Password: dialogue box, enter your password
If you want Windows to remember your password you can click the checkbox beside Remember my password
Click OK to continue
The Wizard will now ask you to name this shortcut
You can name it anything you like, just as you would name a directory on your hard drive
Click Next to continue
From the Start menu, select My Network Places
The shortcut you created to your account will be in the list
To open your new FTP account double click the shortcut
The login screen will open, prompting you for your User Name and Password. Note: User Name, userid, NetID all mean the same
Enter them, and click OK
Then open the folder where your site is located and copy n paste all of the contents into your ftp location.
MAKE SURE everything goes into the Public_html folder. You must also have an index.htm, index.html, index.php or defautl with any of those extension.
If all goes well...KABOOM...your site will be on the internet!
Let us know how it works out.

What're the hidden clause I should know before selecting a web host?
I hope to look for a low cost web host to sell my crafts online.
What%26#039;re the hidden clause I should know before selecting a web host?
I agree with the list mentioned above. I would also add in service. These days most hosting companies will offer many similar plans at similar pricing, but what really sets them apart is service. So test the waters....send them a few emails asking questions.
Do you like what you see? Did they respond in a timely manner? For me personally it%26#039;s NOT always about getting the right answer, when it comes to customer support. It%26#039;s ok for tech or support personnel to tell me they don%26#039;t know the answer. While, like anyone else, I would like to get an answer to my issue everytime, it%26#039;s also about how they handle those times when they don%26#039;t know the answer.
Do they make an effort to get you an answer? Are they just blowing you off rather than telling you the truth? For me personally I%26#039;ll spend my money on the honest business that actually tries to meet my customer service needs versus the one that has choppy or shady customer services.
I run a Web Services company online that offers web hosting and design services. My hosting plans start at only $5.77/mo for 5GB of space and 100GB of traffic. All plans come with a free domain name and over 29 scripts and products to help run your site or business included. Customer service for our hosting cutomers is available 24/7 and I can be emailed from the site at anytime for additional help.
Visit http://www.mxdwebservice.com for more information along with tons of free articles and information designed to help you with your online business venture.
I hope I have been a help to you. :)
What%26#039;re the hidden clause I should know before selecting a web host?
(1) Reliability (Uptime must be atleast 99%)
(2) Features (Value-added services like site builder, free tools like forums, blogs etc)
(3) Scalability (Upgradation or downgradation must be easier as it greatly affects your total costs)
(4) Price (Need NOT b the lowest but choose an economical provider)

Why is it needed to transfer a domain name to a web host? How?
Domain obtained from Yahoo to a Web Host of another company.
Why is it needed to transfer a domain name to a web host? How?
So you bought a domain name through Yahoo. Now you need a place to put the name, and you have decided to use some Web Hosting company, other than Yahoo.
It%26#039;s as if you had decided to buy a business, let%26#039;s pretend it is called Lizzie%26#039;s Laundry. But, you don%26#039;t want to use the same building it was in when you bought it - you want to transfer it to some other building. So, of course at the new building you still need to pay rent and such. But anyway, you are transferring the name from the original place, to the new one.
It%26#039;s like that - you get a better deal at the new place, so you want to do business there, not at the original place. So, you transfer the name.
Why is it needed to transfer a domain name to a web host? How?
It%26#039;s not called %26quot;transfer%26quot;. You%26#039;re associating a domain name with your website.
A domain name is just a name. It doesn%26#039;t mean you have a website just because you pay for the name.

How do I transfer my domain name and IP address to another web host?
I was using a web host who lost my entire website.(long story, won%26#039;t explain.) I want to go with someone locally, but according to the TOS from this first host, IP addresses that they registered are their property and I can%26#039;t transfer it. I thought as soon as I registered the domain name, it became mine until it expired. How do I go about transfering my domain name so I can begin building my website again?
How do I transfer my domain name and IP address to another web host?
You can actually change website hosts almost easily. Just sign up with a new one, get the new nameservers from them, and input them into your domain name registration.
Here%26#039;s one potential catch, though: see if the domain name is registered to you. Go to www.iwhois.com, type the domain name in the search bar, then hit Lookup.
Look at the field %26quot;registrant%26quot; and administrative contact. If both fields show that of the host, you%26#039;re in big trouble.
If the registrant and admin contact fields show yours, then you%26#039;re somewhat fine. But your host might not give you the ability to change hosts just like that, especially if you didn%26#039;t read the fine prints prior to signing up.
Bottom line: hope for the best, but expect the worst.

What information do I need to remotely FTP a file from my OLD web host to my NEW web host?
What exact details are needed.
Can it be done without the OLD web hosts co-operation?
What information do I need to remotely FTP a file from my OLD web host to my NEW web host?
You download it from your old host to a folder on your computer and upload as normal to your new provider. You can even do it with Internet Explorer - but a ftp program is easier. When you have all the files on your computer - it may be a good idea to delete them off the old server. If you use FrontPage or something like that. get an FTP program. Coffecup do a freeware one that works OK. Just have two panes - left pane has the files on your computer in it and the right pane the ones on the server - just move them across. I think you drag and drop them.
What information do I need to remotely FTP a file from my OLD web host to my NEW web host?
I agree as above
Can it be done without the OLD web hosts co-operation?

You download it from your old host to a folder on your computer and upload as normal to your new provider. You can even do it with Internet Explorer - but a ftp program is easier. When you have all the files on your computer - it may be a good idea to delete them off the old server. If you use FrontPage or something like that. get an FTP program.
