I think it depends on what kind of business you are interested in starting. Will you be selling something on-line (i.e. retailer) or will it be for information (possibly for a brick and mortar)?
IMO an on-line retail site would be more difficult to set up, but it is possible for you to run and host it. I use %26#039;DreamHost%26#039; which has the ability to host your site and set up retailer shopping carts.
An Information site will be easy, since all you have to do is create pages telling about your services, and include contact information - either an email or an on line form someone can fill out.
As for hiring someone, that will cost some money to create, design, and host. In addition you will need to go back to them from time to time in order to make changes. In NYC a freelancer can charge anywhere from $25/hr and up; plus hosting costs.

I tried to ftp my web page files but were rejected because some of them have spaces in the file names. Help!?
Renaming the files is not practical since I have hundreds of them. Any suggestion? Or if you know off any Windows based web hosting sites?

the only way to fix it is to take out the spaces. while they have spaces they wont work, u%26#039;ll have to rename them all
Reply:I%26#039;m sorry to tell you this, but depending on to where you are trying to upload the files, you may have to rename them. I have encountered several situations in ftp and database operations where file names with spaces cause errors. The best practice I have found, and one that is widely used in industry, is to use an underscore (my_file_name) as a place holder wherever you would normally have a space. Even if you are able to get around renaming them now, I would do it eventually, otherwise you are likely to run into this problem again.

I had the same problem. i just put together a art web site. I think your web hosting is not the problem but the software. I used Microsoft publisher in office. I has a web page wizard that puts together a template website pages with a gallery. I f you know Microsoft word you can use this. I had the same problem. i just put together a art web site. I think your web hosting is not the problem but the software. I used Microsoft publisher in office. I has a web page wizard that puts together a template website pages with a gallery. I f you know Microsoft word you can use this. I have 2 small business websites at the moment...I pay $30 a year for each. They both started out with 50MB storage %26amp; 1000MB transfer. On one of them, I bought 50MB more storage. Domain was/is free.
However, I am constantly having problems with them. The websites will go down during peak hours for no reason, mail service is sporadic, I have deleted 3/4 of my website because they say I keep going over my limit...this is on the 100MB one.
I feel like I should look for a new one, but I really can%26#039;t spend much more than $60 total a year for the two together. I know you can get multiple domains now under some hosting plans, but by the time you pay for the extra domains, it%26#039;s not cheap anymore.

To use web space provided by Web Hosting companies I found is very costly for such huge amount of data. So is it possible to use my personal computer space as a web space for my website. How can I use javascript to scan a local directory and display the files in the browser as if it were really a directory listings page? I could manually make a directory listings page but I would like something that would automatically update itself when new files are added to the directory. ahhh.. I was outta mind yesterday when I wrote of announcing your web on internet ..
to publish your web on the internet .. there are so many ways..
1. use plesk%26#039;s own file manager to upload your files.
2. if you are developoing your site in front page, ask your admins if you are allowed to use front page extension .. it would make lot easier for you to publish your web site.
3. all major tools including front page also allow you to put your ftp details and publish your website to the server. you would need your ftp servername, username, and password ..
remember that you need to upload to httpdocs folders .. if you need to put secure pages .. docs over ssl layer upload those files to httpsdocs folders.
4. use any ftp clients like filezilla, cute ftp , wsftp to upload your sites to the above mentioned folders.
5. if you don%26#039;t have any ftp tools, use your browser with a url like this
ftp://yoursitename.com, it would ask you for ftp username and password. you can simply copy your files from your hard disk to that windows just like you do it from one folder to another.
if any database is attached you can manage it from your plesk admin panel. you will have to setup database, user and import the database schema. Plesk uses phpmyadmin .. just click on the Database button in your plesk admin panel.

I have everything in place in terms of domain and web hosting. A website will be designed in the near future. Until the site is up and running, is it possible to set up an MP3 download with no real actual site design. Specificallty, would somebody be able to tell me if it%26#039;s possible to set something up so that when the URL for my site is typed in the address bar - an instant save / run dialogue appears (RATHER than having a link and clicking save target as). I need help I have set up web hosting and have been having to use the ip address all day to get there. My daughter called me and said Mom congrats on the web page it looks great and I said how did you know and she said she was looking at it. But when I type in www.extreme-photography.com it takes me back to the place holder that has been there for months. It sounds to me that you may have uploaded this with a different file name. If your old website was uploaded to the public.html folder the home page should be saved as index.html or maybe flash in your case,

I signed up for yahoo web hosting.. yahoo tells me I have also 100 sub domains with my plan. I Don%26#039;t really understand what a sub domain is and what it is used for. I tried different sites to get an answer but still don%26#039;t fully understand. The example yahoo gives is info@mydomain.net. Is a sub domain like a e-mail address. I thought I%26#039;d try building my own website but don%26#039;t really have a clue what I am doing. I registered a domain name last night (a .co.uk one) and the same site offers web hosting. well what i use is a decompiler for .swf files. it simply converts the .swf to .fla. including the actions ect. ect.
so just find a flash website that you like. then save the .swf and convert.
also try to lookfor flashkit.com
I do not like the templates the web hosting company provides - they do not look like the rest of my site.
