I contracted with a web designer who did a nice job. See details of problem.?

The situation is I was informed I will have to purchase two software programs in order to maintain my own website. The first one will cost $565 which is 5 times what our contract is for. I didn%26#039;t research the second one yet.

All I want is to use the simple ftp in my web hosting service.(free). I had told him that. Am I entitled to have the website functional without spending additional money for software I won%26#039;t even know how to use? Part of our contract was for me to be given simple instructions on how to maintain the site (with no mention of any additional software.) He%26#039;s already added to the contract amount to add a slideshow program that a previous person coded for me. I have limited experience but should that not have worked and he just had to insert the code? Web designer no. 1 did the slideshow (same type seen on ebay w/pictures moving across the screen. Thanks to anyone who can advise me on my rights. Am I being unreasonable?

Well It depends on what he wants you to buy. If it is dreamweaver, it would make your edits simple, and that is probably why he wants you to buy it. However if you did not agree on buying software, you should not have to. They should give you the design and then if you would like to purchase additional services you may do so. If you want to hand edit html in textpad, and send it via FTP then that is your choice. YOu paid him for a design, and that is all should get. Also the slideshow is probably a copy and paste job. It depends on the implementation. So that may be debatable too.

Well I am not sure about the legallity of the issue, but if you have made a contract where he is ONLY supposed to make a website for you and then he is ONLY supposed to show you how to maintain it yourself (which is only FTP as you say) then I don%26#039;t think you need to purchase those two software programs.
Reply:If it%26#039;s a written contract, then he has to abide by the wording of it. You shouldn%26#039;t have to buy additional programs to maintain the web site, unless he%26#039;s programed a few bugs into it.
Reply:He informed you that you need to have an ftp program. he could have told you that freeware as well as shareware ftp programs are available. The second one you didn%26#039;t mention so i am not sure. It could be a html editor like dreaweaver (again freeware are available). Besides this, however, he is not liable for his advice which in any case doesn%26#039;t seem to be wrong.

About the slideshow, if he gave a quote and you accepted the quote, he is not at fault. However, if he proceeded without informing you, you can refuse to take delivery of that portion and not pay for it.
